Off the clock.
I like being outside and staying active. Guitar and photography are the quieter hours on my own, with room to reflect and slow down a little.

Triathlon
I came to it as a runner. I'd just finished a marathon when a friend took me out on a ride on my dad's borrowed gravel bike, and that same summer I learned proper freestyle technique and signed up for Ironman 70.3 Oceanside. There's less time for it during the school year, but I still ride whenever I can. After graduation I'd like to train for and finish a full 140.6.

Guitar
I've been playing since freshman year of high school, mostly fingerstyle and flatpicking, and the vibrato still needs work. What I play follows what I listen to: blues, country and folk, and soft rock, so a lot of Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Dire Straits and Fleetwood Mac. This semester I'm in an advanced guitar class at Michigan, finally learning theory and standard notation properly and hopefully putting together my own arrangement.

Club soccer
I grew up watching soccer with my dad. He was the Liverpool fan and I was the Arsenal one, and for as long as I can remember we spent early Saturday mornings playing pickup together. I started taking it more seriously in high school, playing on a semi-professional team my junior and senior years, then joined the men's club team as soon as I got to Michigan. I've enjoyed playing with Maize for the last three years, and I'm hoping to go to collegiate club soccer nationals this year.

Reading
I read a lot of science fiction and general fiction, with some philosophy mixed in, and a steady side rotation of books on entrepreneurship, psychology and behavior. I'm always open to recommendations.

Film photography
I shoot on a Canon A-1 that turned up in my basement and, it turned out, had belonged to my stepdad's grandfather. Film suits me because it slows everything down: one frame per moment, and no idea what you got until the roll comes back. It makes me more grateful when I look back at the photos, and more present in the moment I'm taking them.
